Transferred to this company on June 8, 1862. Mustered in as Private. Promoted to 1st Sergeant on November 21, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Wilderness, Virginia, May 5, 1864. Returned to duty in July-August, 1864. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on August 28, 1864. Promoted to Captain on November 30, 1864. Present or accounted for through December, 1864. BRADBURN, Thomas W., 2nd Lieutenant, Company A, 12th Regiment N. C. Troops - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 41, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to 3rd Lieutenant on September 16, 1861. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in February-April, 1862. Defeated for reelection when the company was reorganized on May 1, 1862. Roll of Honor indicates that he died. Place, date, and cause of death not reported. [NCT-5:118]

 

CAMPBELL, Miles Ogburn. He was likely a member of a Senior Reserve Unit. They were assigned to duty in rounding up deserters or draft dodgers. [research continues]

 

CARPENTER, Philip W. - Company G, 57th Regiment, NC TroopsServed as Captain of Company G of this regiment. Reported in command of this company in September-October, 1864. [NCT-14:148]

 

CARTER, Joshua C., Private, Company C, 28th Regiment N. C. Troops- Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 26, August 13, 1861. Wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 2-3, 1863. Returned to duty on or about June 28, 1863. Present or accounted for through November 27, 1864; however, he was reported on detail as a teamster during most of that period. Rejoined the company on November 28, 1864. Present or accounted for until he surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865. [NCT-8:142]

 

COCHRANE, Francis M., 1st Sargeant, Co. G., 37th Regiment, NC Troops - Born in Surry County and resided in Catawba County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Alexander County at age 21, October 9, 1861. Musteder in as Corporal. Reduced in ranks in March-April, 1862. Promoted to Sargeant on August 1, 1862. Promoted to 1st Sargeant on March 11 1863. Killed at Chancellorsville, May 3, 1863. [NCT-9:551]

 

COCHRANE, George Washington, 2nd Lieutenant, Co. G., 37th Regiment, NC Troops - Born in Surry County and resided in Alexander County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Alexander County at age 21, October 9, 1861. Mustered in as Private. Promoted to Sargeant in March-April, 1862. Appointed to 2nd Lieutenant on December 1, 1862. Wounded in the left leg at Chancellorsville Virginia, May 3, 1863. Reported absent wounded or absent without leave until December 17, 1864 , when he was retired to the Invalid Corps by reason of disability from wounds. "Leg was amputated 11 years after closeof was as a result of wound which would not heal." [NCT-9:555]

 

DEAL, Marcus Sylvanus, 1st Lieutenant, Company A, 12th Regiment N. C. Troops - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a teacher prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Corporal on November 1, 1861. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on April 15, 1862. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on May 16, 1864. Present or accounted for until captured at Fisher's Hill, Virginia, September 22, 1864. Confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware, until released on June 17, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. [NCT-5:118]

ERVIN, Archibald B., Private, Company C, 4th Regiment N.C. State Troops - Resided in Iredell County where he enlisted at age 34, February 26, 1862, for the war. Wounded in the left shoulder at Seven Pines, Virginia, May 31, 1862. Rejoined the company in January-May, 1863, and present or accounted for until wounded in the head and left leg at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863. Reported absent wounded until retired to the Invalid Corps on December 6, 1864, by reason of total disability. [NCT-4:394]

 

ERVIN, Ephraim L., This is probably the the private in Co. E, 3rd Jr. Reserves, NC Reserves or the private in Co. B, 8th Battalion, North Carolina Junior Reserves. [More research is needed.]

 

FINGER, Daniel, Private, Company A, 12th Regiment N. C. Troops - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a laborer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 17, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862. Discharged July 6, 1862, by reason of being under age. [NCT-12:3284]

 

FINGER, Sidney M. - Private, Company K, 46th Regiment N. C. Troops. Previously served as Private in Company B, 8th Battalion N.C. Junior Reserves. Transferred to this company on August 17, 1864. Reported absent wounded in November-December, 1864. Place and date wounded not reported. Hospitalized at Charlotte on January, 20, 1865, with a gunshot wound of the "upper extremities right." Returned to duty on February 7, 1865. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865. [NCT-11:231]

 

FORNEY, Hiram Asbury, (25 Feb 1830-8 Nov 1897) Colonel and Commanding Officer of the 89th NC Militia. [B-243] He was the son of Abram Earhardt and Polly (Lineberger) FORNEY and was married to Sarah "Sally" SHRUM, 10 Feb 1853).

 

GAITHER, Junius L., Private, Company K, 46th Regiment N. C. Troops - Born in Iredell County and resided in Catawba County prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 35, March 16, 1863, for the war. Died at Newton on May 30, 1863, of disease. [NCT-11:232]

 

HAWKINS, James Frank, Captain, Co. C., McCorkle's Battalion, Senior Reserves, North Carolina [NARA 230:13:3687]. He was married to Celia McKinis.

 

HOLLER, George W., Private, Company E, 57th Regiment N. C. Troops - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a shoemaker prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 24, July 4, 1862, for the war. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, September 22, 1862. Returned to duty on October 9, 1862. Deserted on January 17,1863. Returned to duty prior to March 1, 1863. Reported present through October 31, 1863. Captured at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, November 7,1863. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, November 11, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout on February 13, 1865. Received at Cox's Wharf, James River, Virginia, February 14-15, 1865, for exchange. Paroled at Newton on April 19, 1865. [NCT-14:152]

 

HOYLE, PHILLIP A., Private, Company F, 23th Regiment N. C. Troops- Born in Catawba County where he resided prior to enlisting at Camp Vance at age 18, October 2, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for until captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 12, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until transferred to Elmira, New York, August 10, 1864. Released at Elmira on June 30, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. [NCT-7:199]

McCORKLE, MATTHEW LOCKE, Captain - Born in Catawba County* where he resided as a lawyer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 43. Elected Captain on June 6, 1861. Present or accounted for until he resigned on or about April 16, 1862, by reason of ill health. Later served as Major and commander of McCorkle's Battalion, N.C. Senior Reserves.

 

MULL, PETER M., Captain, - Previously served as Private in Company K, 1st Regiment N.C. Infantry (6 months, 1861). Appointed Captain of this company on April 1, 1862. Reported present in June, 1862. Wounded in the head and left lung at Washington, North Carolina, September 6, 1862. Hospitalized at Goldsboro. Furloughed for thirty days on September 13, 1862. Furlough extended for fifteen days on October 18, 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, May 3, 1863, still suffering from wounds received at Washington. SELF, WILLIAM R., Corporal - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County, at age 26, July 4, 1862, for the war. the head and/or neck Mustered in the foot at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Reported present through May 11, 1863. Wounded in as Corporal. Reported present through October 31, 1862. Wounded in duty prior to January 1, 1863. at Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 13, 1862. Returned to days on or about July 29, 1863. Returned to duty in November-December, 1863. Reported July 1, 1863, "while carrying the flag." Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia. Furloughed for forty present in March-April, 1864. Wounded in the left thigh at Lynchburg, Virginia, on or about June 18, 1864. Captured at Winchester, Virginia, July 20. 1864. Contracted smallpox and was apparently confined in a Federal hospital at Winchester. Exchanged on an unspecified date. Reported absent sick on December 2, 1864. Survived the war.

 

SHUFORD, MARCUS CORPENING, Corporal - Born in Catawba County* where he resided as a tanner prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 43, March 13, 1862. Mustered in as Private. Promoted to Corporal on January 1, 1863. Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Richmond, Virginia, September 8. 1863. of "ch[ronic] dysentery."

 

SHUFORD, PINKNEY C., Captain - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 29, August 14, 1861. Mustered in as 1st Sergeant.
