CATAWBA COUNTY REGIMENTS

Company E, 8th REGIMENT, N.C. JUNIOR RESERVES

This company was raised in Catawba County as Company B, 8th District Reserve Force, Junior Class, and was organized on May 21, 1864. On June 7, 1864, the 8th Battalion N.C. Junior Reserves was formed, and this company became Company B thereof. On January 3, 1865, the 8th Battalion consolidated with the 4th and 7th Battalions N.C. Junior Reserves, to form the 3rd Regiment N.C. Junior Reserves, in compliance with Special Order No. 277, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, November 22, 1864. This company was then redesignated Company E.

The following roster was compiled primarily from information in the microfilm edition of the Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of North Carolina (Record Group 109, M270), National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, D.C. The Compiled Service Records series includes enlistment papers, pay vouchers, requisitions, letters of resignation, discharge certificates, and abstracts of medical and prisoner of war returns. Materials relating to this company include muster rolls dated May-October, 1864.

Also utilized in this roster were The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, the North Carolina Adjutant General's papers, state militia records, newspaper casualty lists and obituaries, wartime claims for bounty pay and allowances, postwar registers of claims for artificial limbs, Confederate pension applications filed with the states of North Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida, records of the North Carolina Confederate Soldiers' Home, and the 1860 and 1870 federal censuses of North Carolina. A search was made also for relevant letters, diaries, reminiscences, and other manuscripts in the North Carolina State

Archives, the Southern Historical Collection (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and the Duke University Library Special Collections Department.

Among the secondary sources consulted were records of the North Carolina division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, postwar rosters, regimental and county histories, marriage bond, will, and cemetery indexes, published and unpublished genealogies, biographical dictionaries, the North Carolina County Heritage Book series, the Confederate Veteran, Walter Clarke Histories of the Several Regiments and Battalions from North Carolina in the Great War, J861- '65, and the North Carolina volume of the extended edition of Confederate Military History.
