CATAWBA COUNTY REGIMENTS

Company E, 32ND REGIMENT, N.C. TROOPS

This company was raised in Catawba County and enlisted at Newton on August 14, 1861. After being mustered into service, the company was assigned to the 1st Battalion N.C. Infantry and was designated Company E, afterwards Company D, of that unit. In March, 1862, the 1st Battalion was reorganized and became the 32nd Regiment N.C. Troops. This company was transferred to the 32nd Regiment and was designated Company E. The company functioned thereafter as a part of the 32nd Regiment, and its history for the remainder of the war is reported as a part of the regimental history. [Because the 1st Battalion N.C. Infantry was a provisional organization that had only a brief existence, rosters of the companies that comprised that unit have not been included in the North Carolina Troops series. The period during which the men of this company served in the 1st Battalion is covered in the. following roster. For additional information concerning the history of the 1st Battalion, see page 1 of this volume and Volume III, page 65.]

The information contained in the following roster was compiled principally from company muster rolls for August 14, 1861-February, 1865. No company muster rolls were found for March-April, 1865. Valuable information was obtained from primary sources such as the Roll of Honor, discharge certificates, medical records, prisoner of war records, pension applications, and Civil War newspapers. Secondary sources such as postwar rosters and histories, cemetery records, and records of the United Daughters of the Confederacy also provided useful information.
