CATAWBA COUNTY REGIMENTS

     

Company A, 12th REGIMENT, N.C. TROOPS

This company, known as the "Catawba Rifles," was raised in Catawba County and enlisted at Newton on April 27, 1861. It tendered its service to the state and was ordered to Garysburg, where it was assigned to this regiment. The company was mustered in as Captain John Ray's Company and was designated Company K and Company G before it was designated Company A. After it was mustered into the regiment the company functioned as a part of the regiment, and its history for the war period is recorded as a part of the regimental history.

The information contained in the following roster of the company was compiled principally from company muster rolls for April 27, 1861-February, 1862; July-October, 1862; January-August, 1863; and November, 1863-December, 1864. No company muster rolls were found for March-June, 1862; November-December, 1862; September-October, 1863i or for the period after December. 1864. In addition to the company muster rolls. Roll Of Honor records, receipt rolls, hospital records. prisoner of war records, and other primary records, supplemented by state pension applications, United Daughters of the Confederacy records, and postwar rosters 'and histories, all provided useful information.

CAPTAINS

RAY ,.JOHN, Captain - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a merchant prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 37. Elected Captain on May 12, 1861, to rank from April 27, 1861, Present or accounted for until appointed Captain of Company F, 32nd Regiment N. C Troops, September 14, 1861.

ROWE, DAVID PINKNEY, Captain - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a carpenter prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 25. Appointed 3rd Lieutenant to rank from April 27. 1861 and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on May 12, 1861. Promoted to Captain to rank from September 16, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Gaines' Mill, Virginia, June 27, 1862. Promoted to Major on or about July 1, 1862, and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment.

WILFONG, YANCY M. , Captain - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21. Appointed 3rd Lieutenant to rank from April 27, 1861, and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant to rank from September 16, 1861. Promoted to Captain on June 3, 1862. Present or accounted for until killed at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 12, 1864.

JOHNSTON, JOSEPH FORNEY, Captain - Previously served as Aide-de-Camp (1st Lieutenant) on the staff of Brigadier General Robert D. Johnston. Appointed Captain of this company subsequent to December 22, 1864. Paroled at Charlotte on May 13, 1865.

LIEUTENANTS

BRADBURN, THOMAS W., 2nd Lieutenant - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 41, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to 3rd Lieutenant on September 16, 1861. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in February-April, 1862. Defeated for reelection when the company was reorganized on May 1, 1862. Roll of Honor indicates that he died. Place, date, and cause of death not reported.

BROWN, JAMES M., 2rid Lieutenant - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a teacher prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 22, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Sergeant on September 16, 1861. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant to rank from May 1, 1862. Present of accounted for until wounded in the left knee at Malvern Hill,-Virginia, July 1 1862. Reported absent wounded until he resigned on April 9, 1863. Resignation accepted April 18, 1863.

DEAL, MARCUS SYLVANUS, 1st Lieutenant - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a teacher prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Corporal on November 1, 1861. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on April 15, 1862. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on May 16, 1864. Present or accounted for until captured at Fisher's Hill, Virginia, September 22, 1864. Confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware, until released on June 17, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

RUDISILL. HENRY PHILIP, 2nd Lieutenant - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a carpenter prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 18, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Corporal and promoted to Sergeant in February-October, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right hand at or near Gaines' Mill, Virginia, on or about June 27, 1862. Returned to duty prior to November 1, 1862, and was promoted to 1st Sergeant in November, 1862-February, 1863. Elected 2rid Lieutenant on April 25, 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded in the left arm and captured at Winchester, Virginia, September 19, 1864. Left arm amputated. Hospitalized at Baltimore, Maryland, until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland. Paroled and transferred to Venus Point, Savannah River, Georgia, where he was received November 15, 1864, for exchange. Reported absent wounded until he resigned on February 3, 1865, by reason of disability from wounds.

SHERRILL, URIAH FRANK, 1st Lieutenant - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a merchant prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 27. Elected 1st Lieutenant on May 12, 1861. Died at or near Norfolk, Virginia, July 23, 1861, of "fever."

YOUNT, MILES A., 1st Lieutenant - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a carpenter prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 26, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as 1st Sergeant and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant to rank from September 16, 1861. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on June 5, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded and captured at or near Sharpsburg, Maryland, on or about September 17, 1862. Confined at Fort McHenry, Maryland, and at Fort Monroe, Virginia, until received at Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia; October 19, 1862, for exchange. Declared exchanged at Aiken's Landing on November 10, 1862. Present or accounted for until hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, February 17, 1864, with a gunshot wound of the left side; however, place and date wounded not reported. Retired to the Invalid Corps on May 16, 1864.

ABERNATHY, PATRICK, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a "smith" prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 22, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company F, 32nd Regiment N. C. Troops, September 14, 1861.

ARNDT, JOHN MARVIN, Private - Born in Catawba County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 19, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right leg at Cold Harbor, Virginia, June 1, 1864. Right leg amputated. Reported absent wounded until discharged on February 3, 1865, by reason of disability.

BAILEY, GEORGE, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a tanner prior, to enlisting in Catawba County at age 23, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company F, 32nd Regiment N. C. Troops, on or about September 14, 1861.

BARRINGER, ALFRED M., Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a carpenter prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862. Died at Richmond, Virginia, July 6, 1862, of wounds.

BOLCH, SALATHIEL A., Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a laborer or farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 18, April 27, 1861. Returned to duty prior to November 1, 1862, and present or accounted for until captured at or near Strasburg, Virginia, on or about October 20, 1864. BOST, ELIAS G., Sergeant - Born in Catawba County* where he resided as a carpenter or farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 23, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Corporal on September 16, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant on August 1, 1863. Present or accounted for until reported absent wounded from January-February, 1864, through December, 1864. Place and date wounded not reported. Paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

BOST, HARVEY, Private - Born in Catawba County* where he resided as a carpenter prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 26, October 16, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the left arm at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 1-3, 1863. Left arm amputated. Reported absent wounded until discharged on January 27, 1864. by reason of disability.

BOST, NOAH A., Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a laborer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 22, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until killed at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862.

BOST, ROBERT A., Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 27, April 27. 1861. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company K, 46th Regiment N. C. Troops, June 8, 1862.

BOWMAN, ELKANA L., Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a carpenter prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 26, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for through June, 1863. Not listed in the records of this company after June, 1865. No further records.

BOWMAN, J. A., Private - Enlisted in Catawba County on April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until killed at or near Wilderness, Virginia, on or about May 6, 1864.

BOWMAN, LANSON, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 23, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until killed at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1, 1863.

BOWMAN, NOAH, Private - Resided in Catawba or Alexander counties and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 19, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until he deserted on April 28, 1863. Apprehended at an unspecified date and was confined at Castle Thunder Prison, Richmond, Virginia. Escaped at an unspecified date but was recaptured on October 7, 1865. Confined again at Castle Thunder but escaped on or about December 1, 1863, and deserted to the enemy. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D. C., until released on or about March 15, 1864, after taking the Oath of Amnesty.

BOWMAN, POLYCARP C., Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 19, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until hospitalized at Danville, Virginia, May 18, 1864, with a gunshot wound of the head; however, place and date wounded not reported. Returned to duty prior to November 1, 1864, and present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

BOWMAN, Q. E., Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 26, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, May 18, 1864, with a gunshot wound; however, place and date wounded not reported. Returned to duty prior to October 19, 1864, when he was wounded in the left foot and captured at Cedar Creek, Virginia. Hospitalized at Baltimore, Maryland, until exchanged on or about October 29, 1864. Reported absent wounded until paroled at Charlotte in May, 1865.

BOWMAN, WILLIAM, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 18, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until killed at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 12, 1864.

BOWMAN, WILSON, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 26, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until he deserted on August 11, 1865. Reported under arrest on company muster roll dated November-December, 1865, and was court-martialed on or about February 12. 1864. Reported absent sick through December, 1864. Paroled at Richmond, Virginia, on or about April 21, 1865.

Present or accounted for until hospitalized at Richmond on May 6, 1863, with a gunshot wound of the right finger; however, place and date wounded not reported. Returned to duty in March-April, 1864, and present or accounted for until captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 12, 1864. CLONINGER, ELCANAH, Private - Born in Catawba County* where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 57, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right arm at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862. Right arm amputated. Reported absent wounded until discharged on February 1, 1864, by reason of disability. Took the Oath of Allegiance at Salisbury on June 6, 1865.

COFFEY, A., Private - Resided in Caldwell County prior to enlisting at Camp Vance on May 25, 1864, for the war. Present or accounted for until captured near Petersburg, Virginia, March 25, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 24, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

DEAL, E. D., Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted on April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded in the left leg at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 2, 1863. Returned to duty in November-December, 1863, and present or accounted for until captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 12, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until transferred to Elmira, New York, August 10, 1864. Released at Elmira on June 30, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

DEAL, ELCANAH, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 33, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for through December, 1864; however, he was reported absent sick or absent on light duty during most of that period. Died "at home" in 1865 of disease. Exact date of death not reported.

DEAL, GOVAN, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 22, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until he died at Richmond, Virginia, on July 16, 1862, or August 15, 1862, of "typhoid fever."

DEAL, HENRY J., Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until killed at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863.

DEAL, M. M., Private - Enlisted in Catawba County on November 1, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for until captured near Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 12, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until transferred to Elmira, New York, August 10, 1864. Died at Elmira on April 20, 1865, of "pneumonia."

DEITZE, JACOB, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 21, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until he was "killed by accident" at Shepherdstown, Virginia, September 20, 1862.

DELLINGER, JOHN H., Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company F, 32nd Regiment N. C. Troops, September 14, 1861.

DIXON, JACOB A., Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a laborer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 23, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until killed at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 12, 1864.

DUNLAP, J. H., Private - Place and date of enlistment not reported. Reported on duty as a provost guard at Jamestown in April, 1865. No further records.

EATON, JAMES A., Private - Resided in Catawba or Gaston counties and was by occupation a cabinetmaker prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 19, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company F, 32nd Regiment N. C. Troops, September 14, 1861.

EPPS, JOHN A., Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862. Returned to duty in 'November, 1862-February, 1863, and present or accounted for until wounded in the arm and shoulder at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 2, 1863. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863, and present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

FINGER, DANIEL, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a laborer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 17, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862. Discharged July 6, 1862, by reason of being under age.

FOX, GEORGE, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 17, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862. Returned to duty in November, 1862-February, 1863, and present or accounted for until wounded in the face at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863', and present or accounted for until captured at Fort Stedman, Virginia, March 25, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, March 27, 1865. FRY, JOSEPH N., Private - Previously served in Company E, McRae's Battalion N. C. Cavalry. Transferred to this company in May-October, 1864, and present or accounted for until transferred back to Company E, McRae's Battalion N. C. Cavalry, on or about March 8, 1865.

FRY, MILES, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 18, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded in the leg at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863, and present or accounted for until killed at or near Warrenton, Virginia, on or about October 14, 1863.

FRY, W. W., Private - Resided in Alexander County and enlisted in Catawba County at age 17, November 1, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for until wounded at Petersburg, Virginia, on or about April 2, 1865. Captured in hospital at Richmond, Virginia, April 3, 1865, and transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, May 9, 1865. Released at Point Lookout on June 26, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance:

GAULTNEY, GEORGE R., Private - Was by occupation a merchant prior to enlisting in Catawba County on June 15, 186i. Present or accounted for through July 1, 1861. Roll of Honor indicates he was discharged. Date and reason discharged not reported.

HALMAN, DANIEL E., Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 19, July 17, 1861. Present or accounted for through November, 1862. Company muster rolls indicate that he died at Hanover Junction, Virginia, on or about December 18, 1862; however, Roll of Honor indicates he died in the smallpox camp near Fredericksburg, Virginia, in December, 1862.

HARWELL, CAMA, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County, at age 21, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at or near Gaines' Mill, Virginia, on or about June 27, 1862. Returned to duty prior to November 1, 1862, and present or accounted for until wounded in the right thigh at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 2-3, 1863. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863, and present or accounted for until wounded in both thighs and captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 12, 1864. Hospitalized at various Federal hospitals until confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D. C., August 17, 1864. Transferred to Elmira, New York, August 28, 1864, and was released at Elmira on June 16, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

HAWN, ELISHA L., Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a carpenter prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 22, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

HEDRICK, SIDNEY, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 23, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until reported as a prisoner of war from July, 1862, through November, 1862. Place and date captured not reported. Returned to duty prior to March 1, 1863, and present or accounted for through December, 1864.

SHERRILL, JOHN A. L., Private - Resided in Catawba County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 25, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Sergeant and promoted to 1st Sergeant in November-December, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Hanover Court House, Virginia, May 27, 1862. Returned to duty prior to November 1, 1862, and was appointed 3rd Lieutenant prior to March 1, 1863. "Failed to pass the board" and was reduced to ranks iv, February-April, 1863. Present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

SHERRILL, MILES OSBORNE, 1st Sergeant - Born in Catawba County where he resided as a merchant or farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 19, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Corporal and was reduced to ranks in November-December, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant in February-October, 1862, and was promoted to 1st Sergeant on May 1, 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right leg and captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 9, 1864. Right leg amputated. Hospitalized at various Federal hospitals until confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D. C., October 25, 1864. Transferred to Elmira, New York, December 16, 1864. Paroled at Elmira on February 9, 1865, and transferred for exchange. Received at Boulware's and Cox's Wharf, James River, Virginia, February 20-21, 1855, for exchange.

SHERRILL, THOMAS, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a merchant prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 18, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company F, 32nd Regiment N.C. Troops, September 14, 1861.

Present or accounted for until captured near Petersburg, Virginia, March 25, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 20, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

SHOOK, JOHN, Private - Enlisted in Catawba County on April 1, 1862. Died in hospital at Richmond, Virginia, August 7, 1862, of "continued fever."

Returned to duty prior to March 1, 1865, and present or accounted for until wounded in the side at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863, and present or accounted for until captured in hospital at Richmond, Virginia, April 3, 1865. Confined at Libby Prison, Richmond, until transferred to Newport News, Virginia,. April 23, 1865. Released at Newport News on June 30, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

SIGMAN, NEWTON, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 22, October 16, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, on or about July 1, 1862. Returned to duty prior to February 1, 1863, and present or accounted for until wounded in the leg at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 2, 1863. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863, and present or accounted for until captured at Harper's Farm, Virginia, April 6, 1865. Confined at City Point, Virginia, until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, where he took the Oath of Allegiance on June 19, 1865.

SIGMAN, WESLEY, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until reported absent wounded on company muster rolls dated May-August, 1863; however, place and date wounded not reported. Roll of Honor indicates that he deserted on April 27, 1863. No further records.

SIGMON, ALFRED, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 19, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded in the back and captured at South Mountain, Maryland, on or about September 14, 1862. Paroled on or about September 24, 1862, and returned to duty in November, 1862-February, 1863. Present or accounted for until captured at Fisher's Hill, Virginia, on or about September 22, 1864. Confined at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, October 13, 1864. Transferred to Venus Point, Savannah River, Georgia, where he was received November 15, 1864, for exchange. Reported absent sick through December, 1864. Paroled at Greensboro on or about April 28, 1865.

SIGMON, CALVIN T., Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 24, October 16, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the shoulder at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 2, 1863. Returned to duty in January-February, 1864, and present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

SIGMON, JETHRO, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 37, March 14, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Richmond, Virginia, on or about June 12, 1864, of wounds. Place and date wounded not reported.

SIGMON, MARCUS, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 20, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, March 26, 1865, with a gunshot wound of the left leg; however, place and date wounded not reported. No further records.

SIGMON, RILEY SYLVANUS, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 18, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until he died at Richmond, Virginia, September 4, 1862, of "typhoid fever."

SIGMON, W. R., Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 45, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

SIGMON, WILLIAM, Private - Enlisted in Catawba County on April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for through December 12, 1863; however, he was reported absent sick during most of that period. No further records.

SIPE, JACOB, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 18, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until hospitalized at Culpeper, Virginia, September 27, 1862, with a shell wound; however, place and date wounded not reported. Returned to duty prior to November 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until reported as a prisoner of war on company muster rolls dated May 1-December, 1864; however, records of the Federal Provost Marshal do not substantiate that report. No further records.

SIPE, NOAH, Private - Resided in Catawba County prior to enlisting at Camp Vance on November 1, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for until captured at High Bridge, Virginia, April 6, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 19, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

SMITH, JULIUS A., Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 20, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company F, 32nd Regiment N. C. Troops, September 14, 1861.

SMITH, PETER F., Corporal - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a teacher prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 26, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Corporal. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company F, 32nd Regiment N. C. Troops, September 14, 1861.

SMYER, GEORGE S., Sergeant - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a student prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Sergeant in February-October, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862. Returned to duty prior to November 1, 1862, and present or accounted for until killed at Hagerstown, Maryland, July 6, 1863.

SMYER, L. Q., Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 37, March 14, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for through December, 1864.

SMYER, SILAS, Sergeant - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 25, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Corporal on September 1, 1862. Promoted to Sergeant in March-April, 1864. Present or accounted for until wounded in the left thigh and left hand and captured at Winchester, Virginia, September 19, 1864. Hospitalized at various Federal hospitals until confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, October 18, 1864. Paroled and transferred to Venus Point, Savannah River, Georgia, where he was received November 15, 1864, for exchange. Reported absent wounded through December, 1864, but returned to duty prior to March 25, 1865, when he was captured at Fort Stedman, Virginia. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D. C., until transferred to Elmira, New York, May 1, 1865. Released at Elmira on July 7, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

TRAVIS, NELSON, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the hand at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 2, 1863. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863, and present or accounted for until hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, March 26, 1865, with a gunshot wound of the right foot. Place and date wounded not reported. Took the Oath of Allegiance on July 5, 1865.

TURBYFIELD, THOMAS A., Private - Born in Iredell County and resided in Catawba County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until killed at Chancellorsville, Virginia, on or about May 3, 1863.

TURBYFIELD, W. O., Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 24, November 22, 1861. Present or accounted for until he died in camp near Fredericksburg, Virginia, April 17, 1863, of "chronic diarrhoea."

TURNER, JOHN, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 17, June 15, 1861. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company E, 32nd Regiment N. C. Troops, November 1, 1861.

TURNER, JOSEPHUS, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a merchant prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21, June 15, 1861. Present or accounted for through February, 1862. Roll of Honor indicates he was discharged. Date and reason discharged not reported.

VAN GARDNER, T. H., Private - Place and date of enlistment not reported. Records of the Federal Provost Marshal indicate he was captured at or near Richmond, Virginia, April 3, 1865, and was paroled on April 18, 1865.

WARREN, JOHN Q., Private - Previously served in Company F, 38th Regiment N.C. Troops, Transferred to this company on June 1, 1862, in exchange for Private John D. Hoke. Present or accounted for until hospitalized at Petersburg, Virginia, August 5, 1863, with a gunshot wound of the right thigh; however, place and date wounded not reported. Returned to duty prior to January 1, 1864, and present or accounted for until captured near Washington, D.C., July 14, 1864. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, until transferred to Elmira, New York, July 23, 1864. Released at Elmira on July 7, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

WEBB, C. A., Private - Resided in Catawba County prior to enlisting at Camp Vance on October 12, 1863, for the war. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Corporal on November 11, 1863. Reduced to ranks prior to May 1, 1864. Present or accounted for until captured at Harper's Farm, Virginia, April 6, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 22, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

WEBB, CURTIS, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 16, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for through February, 1862. Roll of Honor indicates he was discharged at an unspecified date by reason of being under age.

WHITE, WILSON, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 19, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

WHITENER, LEROY R., Sergeant - Born in Catawba County* where he resided as a carpenter prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 23, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Sergeant on May 1, 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right leg and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1-4, 1863. Hospitalized at Gettysburg until transferred to Davids Island, New York Harbor, July 17-24, 1863. Paroled at Davids Island and transferred to City Point, Virginia, where he was received August 28, 1863, for exchange. Rejoined the company prior to January 1, 1864, and present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

WHITENER, PETER WILFONG, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a carpenter prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the side and captured at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863. Exchanged on or about May 13, 1863. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863, when he was wounded in the left thigh and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Left leg amputated. Hospitalized at Gettysburg and at Baltimore, Maryland, until paroled and transferred to City Point, Virginia, where he was received November 17, 1863, for exchange. Reported absent wounded until he was retired on June 9, 1864, by reason of disability.

WILFONG, GEORGE M., Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a merchant prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 27, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Sergeant but was reduced to ranks in March-October, 1862. Present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

WILFONG, SIDNEY THEODORE, Sergeant - Born in Catawba County where he resided as a tanner prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 17, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Private. Present or accounted for until wounded in the left thigh 'at Gaines' Mill, Virginia, June 27, 1862. Returned to duty prior to November 1, 1862, and was promoted to Sergeant in November, 1862-February, 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right arm and captured at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863. Hospitalized at Washington, D. C., where his right arm was amputated. Paroled at Washington and transferred for exchange on or about June 25, 1863. Reported absent wounded until discharged on or about January 29, 1864, by reason of disability.

WILKERSON, JACOB M., Private - Born in Catawba County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 19, July 17, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862. Returned to duty in May-June, 1863, but was furloughed in July-August, 1863, by reason of disability. Reported absent on light duty at Gordonsville, Virginia, from November-December, 1863, through April, 1864. Returned to duty prior to September 19, 1864, when he was captured at Winchester, Virginia. Confined at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, where he arrived September 26, 1864. Paroled at Point Lookout and transferred to Boulware's Wharf, James River, Virginia, where he was received March 18, 1865, for exchange.

WILKERSON, JOHN F., Private - Born in Catawba County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 18, August 14, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

WILKERSON, RUFUS, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 18, April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862. Reported absent wounded through April, 1863, and reported absent on detached service from May-June, 1863, through August, 1863. Returned to duty prior to January 1, 1864, and present or accounted for until captured near Petersburg, Virginia, March 25, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 21, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

WILSON, DANIEL C., Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 19, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company E, 32nd Regiment N. C. Troops, September 14, 1861.

WILSON, JOSEPH HENRY, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a railroad conductor prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 27, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862. Died at home in Catawba County on or about October 13, 1862, of wounds.

YOUNT, ELCANAH, Private - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age .38, March 14, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for through April, 1863. Company muster rolls dated May-December, 1863, indicate that he was captured on July 1, 1863; however, records of the Federal Provost Marshal do not substantiate that report. Company muster roll dated January-February, 1864, indicates he was absent on furlough. Returned to duty in March-April, 1864, and present or accounted for until hospitalized at Charlottesville, Virginia, June 16, 1864, with "debilitas." Died" in hospital at Charlottesville on July 2, 1864.

YOUNT, JOHN HOSEA, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a carpenter prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 29, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until captured at Petersburg, Virginia, March 25, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 3, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

YOUNT, SIDNEY LEANDER, Sergeant - Born in Catawba County* where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 20, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Sergeant in March-October, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862.
